The California Department of Education Announces $70,000,000 Funding for CAHSEE Intensive Instruction and Services

Funding Name: California High School Exit Exam Intensive Instruction and Services

Eligible Applicants: Local educational agencies

Required Eligibility Criteria: Local educational agencies with students in the class of 2007 and the class of 2008 who have failed one or both parts of the CAHSEE are eligible for services.

Funding Description: Funding supports intensive instruction and services for eligible students in the class of 2007 and the class of 2008 who are required to pass the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) and have failed one or both parts of the examination. Intensive instruction and services may include, but are not limited to, all of the following: individual or small group instruction; the hiring of additional teachers; purchasing, scoring, and reviewing diagnostic assessments; counseling; designing instruction to meet specific needs of eligible pupils; and appropriate teacher training to meet the needs of eligible pupils. As a condition of receiving funds, each local educational agency (LEA) must meet certain obligations and ensure that each student receives intensive instruction and services.

Allocation Formula: Eligible students are determined by using the data provided by LEAs to the California Department of Education (CDE) via an online form. Each LEA must submit the following data: (1) the number of grade twelve students in the class of 2007; (2) the number of grade twelve students in the class of 2007 who have not yet passed one or both parts of CAHSEE; (3) the number of grade eleven students in the class of 2008; and (4) the number of grade eleven students in the class of 2008 who have not yet passed one or both parts of the CAHSEE. To determine the number of eligible students for each district, CDE staff will add the number of students who have not yet passed one or both parts of the CAHSEE from each school.
