*See the table at the end of this page for a list of which students may be eligible to participate in each administration.

During the 2007-08 school year, grade ten, eleven, and twelve students, as well as adult students, are eligible to take the CAHSEE unless they have previously passed the exam. No student who has previously passed the CAHSEE is eligible to retake the exam. Students only retake the part(s) of the exam not passed. Only grade twelve and adult students may be tested during the July administration.

Individual student results are returned to school districts approximately six weeks after the exam materials are received by the contractor for scoring. Therefore, student results from the May 2008 administration of the CAHSEE will arrive in school districts in late June.

School districts that wish to have student results back before June graduation ceremonies should not select the May 2008 administration option for grade twelve and adult students. School districts will be required to acknowledge this prior to ordering test materials for the May 2008 administration.

Guidelines For Scheduling Grade Ten Students

  • All students must take the CAHSEE in grade ten and may only take it once in grade ten. All grade ten students must take the CAHSEE during the census administration, unless they are absent or are a retained grade ten student who previously passed the exam.

  • Retained grade ten students who have previously passed the CAHSEE may not retake the exam. However, an answer document with completed demographic information must be submitted for these students as part of the calculation of adequate yearly progress (AYP).

  • Districts must offer the grade ten census administration in either February or March.

  • Districts may provide grade ten students who were absent during the census administration with a make-up opportunity in either March or May.

  • No grade ten students are eligible to take the CAHSEE in July, October, November, or December.

Guidelines For Scheduling Grade Eleven Students

  • Grade eleven students may be administered the CAHSEE up to two times per school year for the part(s) of the exam not previously passed.

  • Grade eleven students must not test in successive administrations (e.g., October and November).

Guidelines For Scheduling Grade Twelve Students

  • Grade twelve students may be administered the CAHSEE up to three times per school year for the part(s) of the exam not previously passed.

  • Grade twelve students may test in successive administrations. However, it is recommended that school districts allow enough time between administrations to receive score reports back from the previous administration and allow time for remediation prior to the next administration.

  • Please note that student results from the May 2008 administration of the CAHSEE will arrive in school districts in late June 2008. School districts that wish to have student results back before June 2008 graduation ceremonies should not select the May 2008 administration option for grade twelve and adult students. School districts will be required to acknowledge this prior to ordering test materials for the May 2008 administration.

Guidelines For Scheduling Adult Students

  • Adult students may be administered the CAHSEE up to three times per school year for the part(s) of the exam not previously passed.

  • Adult students may test in successive administrations. However, it is recommended that school districts allow enough time between administrations to receive score reports back from the previous administration and allow time for remediation prior to the next administration.

The table below summarizes which students may be eligible to participate in each administration during the 2007-08 school year. It is important to note that the administration schedule selected by school districts must conform with the Title 5 Regulations that govern the CAHSEE.
